In 1949 Vancouver Island's Esquimalt & nanaimo railway became Canada's first major railway to be fully dieselized. As the F&N -- the westernmost part of the vast Canadian Pacific system -- entered the prosperous post-war years, technological, industrial and social change became dominant forces in the railway's history. Tarditional passenger trains with wooden coaches, and railway post office and express cars gave way to stainless steel Rail Diesel Cars, or "Dayliners," which served the small towns, and flag stops all along the scenic line. The nature of the F&N's traffic base changes in the 1950's as coal mining declined and all but disappeaed from Vancouver island....etc. (from the flyleaf). Appendices include: CPR Diesel locomotives and CPR and VIA rail diesel cars on the E&N railway; E&N railway work equipment gallery; Railway transfer service tugs, barges and self-oropelled vessels; Canadian Pacific and Seaspan railcar ferries used for E&N transfer services; E&N railway structure and bridge drawings; E&N operating timetable, trackage diagrams & grade profiles. A very detailed and complete history, all in one volume.
